Sales
Tax
In
the United States, when you purchase an item at a store, you will
most likely have to pay a sales tax on top of the list price of the
item. Sales taxes are imposed by the states as is their constitutional
right.
!
Exception: Most
food items, like milk, bread and butter, are not taxed, except for
hot prepared foods.
Sales
tax varies by state, but the average sales tax is around 7.25%.
Some
counties add on additional taxes to the state tax. For instance, if
you are purchasing an item at a store in Miami, you will pay 6.5%:
6% state sales tax and 0.5% county sales tax.
